Předpřítomný a minulý čas:
- When did it start raining? It started raining an hour ago. (minulý)
- How long has it been raining? It´s been raining for an hour. (předpřítomný)
- They went out after dinner and they´ve just come back. (minulý, předpřítomný)
Předpřítomný čas používáme v souvislosti s novou informací, ale v další řeči pokračujeme v čase minulém:
- A: I´ve burnt myself.
- B: How did you do that?
- A: I picked up a hot kettle.
Předminulý a minulý čas prostý:- Donna wasn´t at home when I phoned. She was in New York.
- Donna had just got home when I phoned. She had been in New York.
Předminulý a minulý čas průběhový:- Kate was sitting in an armchair watching television. She was tired because she had been working very hard.
